secret of
135
The Cloud 135 is a very special hammock that can rightfully claim to the status of ergonomic furniture. It follows the shape of the body while giving its user a 135-degree body-thigh sitting posture which researchers demonstrated to be the most healthy and relaxed position for the spine.
A design born out of need
As many good ideas, the hammock Cloud 135 design was born out of a need: to get a sitting position that eases back pain, or even prevents it.
Having issues with his back, the designer of the product Andreas, was not satisfied with furniture in general. It seems to him that instead of fitting one’s body into the given shape of the furniture, it is the furniture that should be tailored to the body. He browsed over the issue of furniture and ergonomics for some times. Being a passionate paragliding pilot, he got inspired by the way a paragliding wing is shaped. Why not use a similar stringing technique to mold a hammock to the shape of the body?
It worked and moreover, the achieved sitting position has been found to be consistent with the findings of a recognized and well published research.
A research for the optimal sitting position
In November 2006, a team of researchers led by Dr. W. A. Bashir – a radiologist from U.K. - presents the results of a study about the effect of different sitting positions on the spine to the Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
An unexpected result
What they found out is that not only slouching is bad, but also that sitting in an upright position places unnecessary strain on your back. Spending long hours sitting upright can potentially lead to chronic pain problems.
The result of the research clearly demonstrated that a 135-degree body-thigh sitting posture is the best biomechanical sitting position, as opposed to a 90-degree posture, which most people consider normal.
The Researchers’ Conclusion
"We were not created to sit down for long hours, but somehow modern life requires the vast majority of the global population to work in a seated position," Dr. Bashir says. "This made our search for the optimal sitting position all the more important."
"Sitting in a sound anatomic position is essential, since the strain put on the spine and its associated ligaments over time can lead to pain, deformity and chronic illness." concludes Waseem Amir Bashir.
By identifying bad sitting postures and encouraging people to take preventative measures to protect the spine, Dr. Bashir and his colleagues hope to reduce back problems.

A healthy relaxed sitting position
In 135 degrees upper body-thigh sitting position, the lower back is well supported and the lordosis is kept in a neutral position. This takes the pressure away from the discs. The term lordosis refers to the normal inward curvature of the lumbar and cervical regions of the spine.
A precise shaping method
To achieve this 135 degrees upper body-thigh sitting position, a precise system of rope lines – each are measured separately and precisely - has been developed. The stringing work is a handicraft process that cannot be mechanized. On each and every hammock Cloud135, the montage of lines is done by hand. The rope itself has a static structure to avoid stretching and a high weight capacity so the precise shaping work is permanent and the hammock is safe to use.
A technique inspired by paragliding
“ Being a paraglide pilot, anytime I go flying I see the wing above me: a tailored layer of cloth to which a complex system of lines is attached to form the paraglider. This gave me the idea to use a similar technique to shape a hammock” says the designer of the hammock Cloud 135 Andreas Huber.
Paragliders are lightweight glider aircrafts with no rigid structure. The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing consisting of a large number of interconnected cells. The shape of the paraglide is maintained by the suspension lines, the pressure of air entering vents in the front of the wing and the aerodynamic forces of the air flowing over the outside. This system allows it to be and stay airborne, with the pilot guidance.
An intuitive creation process
“ It was intuition and my body feelings that guided me. I realized later that the shape I gave to the Cloud correspond to the recommendations of specialists for a healthy relaxed sitting position with a body-thigh angle of 135 degrees” genuinely explain Andreas.
A detailed description of the posture and of the benefits
In a hammock Cloud135:
- The upper torso is raised and the head is supported in a natural position, at the right angle to read a book watch a movie talk to friends
- The knees are kept slightly bent to prevent them from overstretchin
- The lower part of the hammock’s border (last 10 cm) is tilted upwards, allowing the legs and feet to stretch out the hammock. This upward tilt of the hammock’s lower edge also keeps the feet in a slightly flexed up position, promoting a gentle tonus of the calves which is the normal state of a healthy muscle when resting in a state of slight contraction. This prevents the legs vessels from slackening which is good for the blood pressure.

adjustable
Having a nap, reading a book or cuddling together with a loved one are very different activities that require different positions. The Cloud 135's sitting position is adjustable in a very simple way: one needs to increase or decrease the hanging distance between the two rings of the hammock. This is easily done when the hammock is hung to chains using carabiners or “S” hooks.
For a more upright sitting position: Fasten the carabiner higher up on the chain and the back of the hammock rises.
For a more reclining position: Fasten the carabiner lower on the chain and the back of the hammock lowers.
It is as simple as that! Will the hammock still be at an angle of 135 degrees? No, this position is somewhere in between but the hammock will still nestle your body in a snug, comfortable and healthy manner!
